Singing bowls have been used for musical and religious practices for over 1500 years. The natural and harmonious sound produced when the singing bowl is played ushers in a deep state of relaxation, which assists in reaching and maintaining a meditative state. Singing bowls are also used in chakra healing, sound therapy, Reiki, feng shui, space and energy clearing, stress relief, and many different types of music.
Medicine Buddha is believed to cure suffering through the restorative power of his teachings, and is often depicted with blue skin. He is shown seated and wearing the three robes of a Buddhist monk. His left hand holds a gallipot of healing ointment, while his right hand is raised in benediction. This is an especially apt image for a singing bowl, as the act of playing it is meditative and the powerful, bell-like sound it produces is soothing and healing to the body and spirit.
