Trilobites are extinct marine arthropods that first appeared in the fossil record around 521 million years ago. They flourished in the oceans for almost 270 million years, with over 20,000 species having been described. Because of their diversity and an easily fossilized exoskeleton, they left an extensive fossil record that has advanced important scientific contributions to paleontology, evolutionary biology, and plate tectonics.
