Hyssop is a perennial herb of the mint family that grows in small, fragrant shrubs. Hyssop’s primary properties are of cleansing, consecrating, purifying, and protecting.

It has been valued for millennia for its magical and medicinal qualities. For example, references to Hyssop abound in the Bible. In the Old Testament, Jewish priests were commanded to cleanse the Temple using Hyssop. It was also used for ceremonial purification and physical healing of persons, as well as to spread blood from sacrificial animals on door frames at Passover as protection from the Angel of Death. Perhaps its most famous reference is David’s prayer for forgiveness and sanctification in Psalm 51:7: “Cleanse me with Hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.” In the New Testament, Hyssop branches were used to pass Christ a vinegar-soaked sponge as his last drink at the crucifixion. Ancient Greeks used Hyssop to treat coughs and digestive issues, and in the Middle Ages it was strewn in homes to purify the household and protect from the plague.

Hyssop’s current magical use is in the same vein of protection and purification. It can be used to keep negative energies at bay, as well as for aura cleansing, consecration of magical tools, and removing jinxes or protecting against the evil eye. It can be burned as incense, scattered in sacred spaces, used to dress candles, or mixed with oil or water for cleansing ritual objects. Hyssop can also be used in a ritual bath for purification and absolution of guilt, regret, or worries that may be holding one back, or to wash away the influence of negative energy or spells.
